The Latest on the NFL draft Saturday (all times local):

6:15 p.m.

”Mr. Irrelevant” 2018 is SMU receiver Trey Quinn.

Quinn was the final player selected in the three-day NFL draft DeShone Kizer Jersey , No. 256 overall by the Washington Redskins.

After playing his first two seasons at LSU, the 6-foot, 202-pound Quinn transferred to SMU where he had to sit out a season.

As a junior last year with the Mustangs, Quinn had 114 catches for 1,236 yards and 13 touchdowns. Quinn led the nation with 114 receptions and 8.8 per game. His 114 receptions are the most in a single season at SMU.

He also threw a no-hitter in the opening round of the 2008 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., for South Lake Charles, La.

He opted to bypass his senior season for early entry in the NFL draft, as did his SMU teammate Courtland Sutton, also a receiver.

Sutton, who had 68 catches for 1,085 yards and 12 TDs, was the 40th overall pick, in the second round by Denver.

5:30 p.m.

The Dallas Cowboys have acquired defensive lineman Jihad Ward from Oakland for receiver and kick returner Ryan Switzer.

It’s the second trade of the day for the Cowboys involving a receiver, this time with one leaving instead of coming in. Dallas got Tavon Austin, the eighth overall pick in 2013, from the Los Angeles Rams for a sixth-round pick.

Ward was a healthy scratch most of last season, playing five games despite being a second-round pick in 2016. He had his only career sack in 2017. Ward has played both end and tackle on the defensive line.

Switzer was a fourth-round pick last year with the idea that he would become the primary kick returner. The highlight of his rookie season was an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown in a win over Washington.

The trade reunites Switzer with special teams coach Rich Bisaccia, who left the Cowboys for the same job on new Raiders coach Jon Gruden’s staff.

5:15 p.m.

The Eagles traded up in the seventh round to select Australian rugby player Jordan Mailata with pick No. 233. Mailata Montee Ball Jersey , 6-foot-7, 346 pounds, is projected as an offensive tackle. He visited eight teams, including Philadelphia, and spent a lot of time with offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

The Eagles gave the New England Patriots pick No. 250 and a seventh-rounder next year to move up 17 spots.

Alabama center Bradley Bozeman was selected with the 215th overall pick, a sixth-rounder, by the Baltimore Ravens. He was the 10th Alabama player drafted, tying a school record with one round to go.

Running back Bo Scarbrough later went to the Cowboys in the seventh round to set the school record.

4:30 p.m.

The Chiefs should have been quite familiar with their final selection in this year’s NFL draft.

His dad calls the shots for their biggest rival.

The Chiefs traded up in the sixth round Saturday to select defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie out of Tennessee. His father is longtime NFL linebacker and current Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, whose team has become one of the Chiefs’ biggest obstacles in the AFC West.

Chiefs area scout Pat Perduto laughed when asked whether he spent much time talking to the prospect’s pop, then conceded there was a chuckle in the draft room when the call was made.

The Chiefs actually view the 330-pound youngster as a potential guard.

3:45 p.m.

Luke Falk patterns not just his game but the way he lives his life after Tom Brady.

Same diet and recovery habits. The Washington State quarterback now has another thing in common with the Patriots quarterback: Falk was also taken with the 199th pick of the draft.

Falk put up huge numbers in Washington State’s spread offense under coach Mike Leach and left school as the Pac-12 record holder in total offense, passing touchdowns, passing yards, completions, and attempts.

3:30 p.m.

The Dallas Cowboys had five Super Bowl championship trophies to show off while hosting the NFL draft. They were all on display in a corner at the NFL Draft Experience outside of AT&T Stadium.

Maybe that location off the beaten path was appropriate since it has been a long time since their most recent one.

The Cowboys won the Lombardi Trophy during the 1995 season, which was their third in four years with the Hall of Fame trio of quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin.

The New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers are also five-time champions. The Patriots have won all of their Super Bowl titles since 2001, long after the last of the championships by the Cowboys.

Only the Pittsburgh Steelers have more Super Bowl titles. They won their sixth Lombardi Trophy during the 2008 season, two years before going back to the Super Bowl and losing to the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium, the home of the Cowboys.

No punting away these picks.

Three punters were selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft Reggie White Jersey , including consecutive picks late in the round. It is the first time since 1988 that three punters were taken in the first five rounds.

On Saturday, Michael Dickson, the Australian from the University of Texas, was picked 149th overall by Seattle. Alabama punter JK Scott was drafted 172nd overall by Green Bay, a pick before Oakland took Johnny Townsend from Florida. Townsend was the NCAA leader last season with a 47.5-yard average on his 64 punts.

In 1988, there were three punters selected in the first 102 picks. Tom Tupa, who also went 4-9 as a starting quarterback during

Dan Bouchard can appreciate, better than most, the Miracle in the Desert.

He was a goalie for the expansion Atlanta Flames back in the 1970s, so he knows how difficult it is to build a competitive team from scratch.

”It’s astonishing what they’ve done in Vegas,” said Bouchard, who still lives in the Atlanta area, when reached by phone this week. ”I think it’s the greatest thing to happen to hockey since the Miracle on Ice,” he added, referring to the seminal U.S. upset of the mighty Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics. ”It’s that good.”

Indeed, Vegas has set a new norm for expansion teams in all sports. No longer will it be acceptable to enter a league with a squad full of dregs and take your lumps for a few years, all while fans willingly pay big-league prices to watch an inferior product.

The Golden Knights have come up with a stunning new template for how this expansion thing can be done.

They romped to the Pacific Division title with 51 wins. In the opening round of the playoffs, they finished off the Los Angeles Kings in four straight games , casting aside a franchise that has a pair of Stanley Cup titles this decade while becoming the first expansion team in NHL history to sweep a postseason series in its debut year.

Imagine how storied franchises in Montreal and Detroit and Edmonton must be feeling right about now.

They didn’t even make the playoffs.

From Bouchard’s perspective Brent Grimes Jersey , it’s all good. Vegas’ success right out of the starting gate will make everyone raise their game in the years to come.

”This will wake up the teams that are sitting on $90 million budgets and not doing anything,” he said. ”People will say, `If Vegas can do it, we can do it.’ That’s a paradigm shift in the game.”

When one considers how NHL expansion teams have fared over the years, the Vegas story becomes even more compelling.

The Golden Knights are the first new team in the NHL’s modern era to have a winning record in their inaugural season, a period that began in 1967 and encompasses 26 new franchises (including one, the ill-fated California Seals, who are no longer around).

Only six other first-year teams have made the playoffs – and that includes four that were assured of postseason berths in the landmark 1967 expansion. You see, when the NHL finally broke out of its Original Six format, doubling in size to a dozen teams, it placed all the new franchises in the same division, with the top four getting postseason berths even with sub-.500 records.

Until the Golden Knights came along, the Florida Panthers were the gold standard for NHL expansion. They finished one game below .500 in their first season (1993-94) and missed the playoffs by a single point. In Year 3, they had their first winning record and made it all the way to the Stanley Cup final, though they were swept by the Colorado Avalanche.

That remains the closest the Panthers have come to winning a title.

In Sin City, the wait for a championship figures to be much shorter. Heck, the Golden Knights might do it this year.

They’re 12 wins away from hoisting the Stanley Cup in a city that has always had a soft spot for long shots.

”We’re still a few wins away from this being a great story,” said goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, a key contributor to the Golden Knights success.

Even now Adam Thielen Jersey , it seems like a bit of dream to coach Gerard Gallant, who thankfully will be remembered for something other than getting left at the curb to hail his own cab after being fired by the Panthers.

”When this all started in October, we just wanted to compete,” Gallant said. ”Now we’re going to the second round of the playoffs. It’s unreal.”

For sure, the Golden Knights wound up with a much more talented roster than most expansion teams – partly through astute planning, partly through getting access to better players as a reward for doling out a staggering $500 million expansion fee, which was a more than six-fold increase over the $80 million required of Minnesota and Columbus to enter the league in 2000.

The expansion draft netted a top-line goalie in Fleury, who helped Pittsburgh win three Stanley Cups; center Jonathan Marchessault, a 30-goal scorer in Florida who was surprisingly left exposed by the Panthers; and winger James Neal, who had scored more than 20 goals in all nine of his NHL seasons. It also provided a solid group of defensemen: Colin Miller, Nate Schmidt, Deryk Engelland and Brayden McNabb.

In addition, the Golden Knights wisely nabbed young Swedish center William Karlsson, who hadn’t done much in Columbus but became Vegas’ leading scorer with 43 goals and 35 assists.

”They’ve got some top centers. They’ve got some real good defense. They’ve got good goaltending,” Bouchard observed. ”They went right down the middle. That’s how the built it. Then they complemented it with the fastest guys they could get their hands on. They went for speed.”

Previous expansion teams didn’t have it nearly as good.

Bouchard actually played on one of the better first-year teams when the Flames entered the league in 1972. They were in playoff contention much of the season and finished with more points than four other teams in the 16-team league, including the storied Toronto Maple Leafs.

But that was a team that had to struggle for every win. The Flames had only three 20-goal scorers and were largely carried by their two young goalies, Bouchard and Phil Myre.

”We didn’t have a bona fide 30-goal scorer,” Bouchard recalled. Authentic Womens Albert Wilson Jersey
