Cowboys Q&A: What’s going on with Sean Lee , Tyron Smith? Why won’t Dak Prescott throw deep? s 16-8. As the team looks to regroup, there are a lot of questions heading into their Week 2 matchup against the New York Giants on Sunday night. What are those questions exactly? Let’s check in with the BTB community on twitter.Let’s see what was on your mind...That’s a very good question. It was odd to see the Cowboys All-Pro left tackle play so poorly on Sunday. You’re absolutely right, it wasn’t just the two penalties as he was wondering about like he wasn’t sure who he was supposed to block. There were many plays where his poor execution in blocking turned a would-be big gain into a whole lot of nothing.Hopefully, we can chalk this up to having a bad game. Everyone’s allowed to have them. It’s just that we don’t expect them to come from Smith. There could be a case made for “rust” as he was protected in the preseason. It’s impossible to make any certain conclusions about his play without a second game to evaluate. Once we see the tape from the Giants game, then we can start making a determination about whether Week 1 was a fluke, or was it the start of a trend. Nothing was more substantial in terms of the success of the offense than when Smith was and was not on the field last year. The difference is monumental.Having Smith at left tackle is important, but as we found out on Sunday - having him play like we are all used to is also pretty important. This is definitely something worth monitoring. There are a lot of expectations for the Cowboys second-round pick Connor Williams. Sure, he’s a day two rookie, but many projected him to be a late first-round selection and penciled him in as an immediate starter in the NFL. Well, the Cowboys are most definitely starting him, but he’s not playing at the level they need him to play so far. There are going to be some rookie struggles and let’s not ignore the fact that he just got done battling a tough interior defensive linemen in Kawaan Short, but the Cowboys are going to need more from him if their offensive line is going to control the line of scrimmage. On Monday, the team signed free agent guard Xavier Su’a-Filo to beef up their offensive line. Su’a-Filo worked out with the team last week, but the Cowboys opted to go with Kadeem Edwards on the roster as he was more familiar with the offense should his number get called. While Su’a-Filo may be perceived as the best option to shore up the depth, don’t look for him to be taking time away from the rookie at left guard. Williams needs these snaps. He’s not going to get better by sitting back and watching. Sure, if Williams starts struggling to where he’s more of a liability on the field, the Cowboys could make a switch, but I don’t see that happening , let alone anytime soon. The Cowboys are going to ride with Williams for a while and see what they have before making any kind of change. It was very strange to see the team’s All-Pro linebacker have such a poor outing. He’s been kept in bubble wrap for most of the preseason so he entered the game nice and fresh with a clean bill of health. So why did he struggle so much?To be fair, Cam Newton gave the entire defense fits with the read option. Lee wasn’t the only one guessing wrong on the play, leaving himself out of position to make the tackle. But usually Lee isn’t wrong. He sniffs these things out on a regular basis. Not only was he caught leaning the wrong way at times, but he also had a tough time tackling. Yes, tackling. The good news is - this is definitely an outlier to the type of player Lee is. The better news is - Lee played poorly, yet the defense was still pretty darn good. This speaks to how much better they’ve gotten as a unit. Christian McCaffrey is feisty fella and can be hard to wrap up, but it’s not going to get any easier when Lee faces rookie running back sensation Saquon Barkley on Sunday. You probably have to play the same game that we mentioned above with Smith, when a great player has such a lousy game, you really need to wait and see what happens the next game. If they bounce back, then it can be written off as a one-off issue. If they continue the poor play, then you have to start digging deeper for an underlying issue. It’s easy to get frustrated with the lack of offense, but I would challenge people to take a close look at the game and deduce where the blame really lies. Sometimes the results cloud our ability to see things for what they really are, but as Jason Garrett says, we need to look past the results.A close evaluation of the game identifies Dak Prescott as the biggest violator for an abysmal offense and not the play-calling of Scott Linehan. The Cowboys were in position to succeed on numerous of plays; they had plenty of opportunity to win the game but the players didn’t execute with Prescott and the offensive line being the biggest offenders. That’s not to say Linehan is blameless, he needs to do a better job of coaching and in-game adjustment when things are going that badly. But the players really need to play better as a bottom line. The video above can also help with this question as well. Upon further review, you’ll find that deep passing opportunities were there, but for one reason or another - Prescott didn’t take them. I think all your questions are great, but the guy who should be answering them is no. 4 himself. Why is Dak checking down so much? Does he not trust his arm to make the big throws down the field?Maybe it’s a confidence thing for him. Or it could be that he’s still not acclimated with his new receivers. Whatever is bothering him better come with a quick solution because the Cowboys cannot afford to see too many games like this past week from their new franchise quarterback.I don’t really see either of these guys seeing much action whether they are active on game day or not. Dalton Schultz only played in two snaps on offense as he might have been viewed as an insurance guy if someone got hurt. There seem to be a clear line drawn in the sand between the top two TE’s and the bottom two. Why they choose one guy over the next could be based on what they want to do against that week’s opponent. Don’t be surprised if Rico gets the call soon and Dalton sits out as these two could be swapping out several times over the course of the season until one clearly stands out over the other.Cowboys Game Ball: In a horrendous performance by the Cowboys , one player stood out It’s tough to hand out a game ball after a performance like the one the Dallas Cowboys produced against the Seattle Seahawks. The Cowboys offense stalled again, never really clicking until late in the game, then turnovers stymied those efforts to get back in the game. The defense wasn’t as sharp as it has been the last two weeks, especially since they were up against a Seattle offensive line that was banged-up and playing poorly in 2018. Still, there were some Cowboys that had decent games. This week, one player is proving his worth as a first-round pick, and that’s Leighton Vander Esch. It’s too early to say for sure, but there are hints that he’s a playmaker.Last week, in only 28 snaps, he had seven tackles and did an excellent job of bringing down the ball-carrier when he got his hands on him. This week, LVE was forced into more snaps because of Sean Lee’s hamstring issue. We don’t have the exact snap counts yet, but LVE lead the team with nine solo tackles and tied with Lee for the team lead with 11 total tackles (LVE had nine solo, two assists; Lee had five solo, six assists). He had one tackle for loss. When you look at what he did last week and his performance on Sunday, the trajectory is definitely in the right direction. And that is important given Lee’s hamstring. Lee was shut down in the second half and after the game didn’t sound extremely optimistic about it.We know how Lee’s struggles to stay healthy, and they may have to shut him down for a bit so the hamstring will have time to truly heal.If that happens, solid play from Vander Esch will be crucial if the Cowboys defense hopes to keep the form it showed in the first two weeks.
